Zombie
Mindless vessels of the Green Flu hunting in endless, ravenous packs.
In the world of Left 4 Dead, the term Zombie refers to the vast majority of Common Infected that plague the survivors. These are former humans consumed by a mysterious airborne virus known as the Green Flu. Stripped of higher thought and empathy, they exist solely to spread infection through physical contact. They serve as the relentless environmental hazard throughout every campaign, appearing in endless waves from swamps to city streets. While Special Infected provide unique threats, these mindless hordes are the constant pressure that tests a team's coordination and resource management.

Lore & Background
The infected are living humans infected with a rabies-like pathogen that causes psychosis, as cited in the game's manual. Designer Mike Booth commented: 'Even though we obviously pushed well beyond the realm of believability with many of our "boss" infected, the core idea of a mind-destroying, civilization-collapsing pathogen is more horrifying to me than magically animated corpses, precisely because it is plausible. Rabies is a good example of a pathogen that can turn a loyal, friendly, protective family pet into a slavering attack machine. It is a virus that reprograms the behaviors of a complex animal – a mammal, in fact. What if something similar happened to humans? Left 4 Dead is one possible answer.'
The common infected are fast and agile, weak individually, but overwhelming in numbers. They display a special attraction to high-pitched sounds, such as car alarms and the beeping device attached to pipe bombs. They will often chase down these noises while ignoring lower-pitched, louder sounds, such as gunfire. They occasionally attack en masse, referred to as a 'horde'.
In Their Own Story
The outbreak began when a highly contagious pathogen mutated into something far more aggressive. Victims infected with the Green Flu do not die; instead, their bodies are repurposed by the virus to seek out uninfected hosts. Society collapsed rapidly as cities were overrun by these shambling masses who showed no fear of injury or death. Unlike traditional undead myths, these creatures retain muscle memory and motor function but lack cognition. They communicate through guttural groans and screams that alert other nearby infected to the presence of survivors. This hive-like awareness makes stealth nearly impossible in populated areas, forcing humanity into a desperate fight for survival against their own kind. The sheer scale of the infection suggests it is global, though the games focus on specific regions like Georgia. The horde adapts over time, with new infected behaviors emerging as the virus evolves, keeping survivors constantly off balance.
Reader's Guide
The Common Infected serve as the primary obstacle throughout every campaign, spawning dynamically based on player performance and location. These mindless creatures prioritize closing distance quickly, often sprinting when they sense survivors within range. Their sheer numbers overwhelm defenses, requiring constant vigilance from the team to prevent being swarmed by the endless horde. Players must manage their ammunition carefully, as conserving bullets for Special Infected is vital while using melee weapons or shotguns against the general masses. The AI Director controls their density; if players struggle, fewer enemies appear, but success triggers larger waves known as Safe Room rushes to maintain tension. Interaction with the environment matters significantly during combat encounters. Zombies can pile over obstacles and climb through windows in certain areas to reach prey efficiently. They react strongly to noise, so running or firing weapons attracts more attention from nearby packs wandering the ruins. Understanding their pathfinding limits helps survivors funnel enemies into choke points for efficient crowd control during intense firefights against the undead.
