Boomer
A bloated Special Infected that explodes on death, coating Survivors in bile that attracts the horde.
The Boomer is a Special Infected in Left 4 Dead 2, a 2009 first-person shooter by Valve. It is one of the new types of Special Infected introduced in the sequel, which builds upon the cooperatively focused gameplay of the original Left 4 Dead. The Boomer is a grotesque, bloated human who has contracted a mutated strain of the infection known as the "Green Flu." Its mutation grants it a special ability that makes it highly dangerous: it can vomit corrosive bile that attracts Common Infected to whatever it hits. When killed, the Boomer explodes, coating nearby Survivors in bile and drawing the attention of the horde.

Lore & Background
The Boomer is a Special Infected whose mutation grants it a special ability that makes it highly dangerous. Its presence is hinted at by sound effects, alerting Survivors to its location. The Boomer's primary function is to use its bile to attract Common Infected to Survivors, overwhelming them with numbers. When a Boomer is killed, its body explodes violently, covering any nearby Survivors in acidic bile. This bile acts as a beacon, drawing Common Infected to the affected Survivor. The Boomer itself cannot be controlled by human players in Versus mode; it is one of the Special Infected randomly assigned to Infected players, but they cannot control the Witch or any Common Infected. The Boomer's explosive death is a key tactical element, as it can turn a manageable situation into a chaotic swarm if Survivors are not careful.
In Their Own Story
In the aftermath of the apocalyptic pandemic, the four new Survivors of Left 4 Dead 2 must fight through hordes of Infected, including the Boomer. The Boomer's bile is a jar of Boomer bile, which can be used as a throwable weapon by Survivors to attract Common Infected to whatever it hits—such as fires, Special Infected, or each other. The Boomer itself is a walking hazard; its explosion can instantly coat a Survivor in bile, triggering a horde attack. In the campaign Dead Center, Survivors might encounter Infected CEDA agents in hazmat suits, making them fireproof, but the Boomer remains a constant threat across all five campaigns. The AI Director 2.0 monitors player performance and adjusts the scenario, potentially spawning Boomers to create dynamic challenges, forcing players to manage their positioning and ammunition carefully.
Reader's Guide
The Boomer is a Special Infected that serves as a tactical hazard rather than a direct combat threat. Unlike other Special Infected that hunt individually, the Boomer functions as an area-denial tool designed to overwhelm groups. When a Survivor damages or kills a Boomer, its bloated body ruptures violently, coating nearby Survivors in acidic bile. This bile renders them highly visible and vulnerable to the surrounding Common Infected, triggering a massive swarm. Consequently, engaging a Boomer without preparation usually results in a chaotic horde attack that can overwhelm the team quickly if they are not ready for close-quarters combat. Players must constantly weigh the risk of eliminating a Boomer versus leaving it unchecked until a safer opportunity arises. While its movement speed is generally slower than most Special Infected, it accelerates significantly when closing distance to ensure contact. The AI Director 2.0 utilizes Boomers strategically to punish groups who move too slowly or linger in open areas without adequate cover or weapons. Effective teams often prioritize shooting Boomers from a long range to control exactly where the explosion occurs, ensuring teammates are not caught in the splash zone of corrosive vomit. Managing the immediate aftermath is crucial for survival; Survivors coated in bile must cleanse themselves using Medkits or specific items. In Left 4 Dead 2, Survivors can carry a single first aid kit, special ammo pack, or defibrillator in their major medical supply slot, in addition to either pain pills or an adrenaline shot in their minor medical supply slot. They may also carry a single throwable weapon—Molotov cocktails, pipe bombs, or jars of Boomer bile. The Boomer bile jar can be used to attract Common Infected to whatever it hits, providing a strategic counter to the Boomer's own bile. Ultimately, respecting the Boomer's explosive potential defines whether a group survives the pressure of the horde or becomes overwhelmed.
