Hunter
A silent, leaping predator that strikes from the shadows to drag survivors down.
The Hunter is an agile enemy that can pounce a survivor from long distances, tearing at them until he is pushed off or killed. Voiced by experimental musician Mike Patton, the Hunter is one of five special infected in Left 4 Dead. Its distinctive sound, silhouette, and musical cue make its presence easily recognizable by players.

Lore & Background
In the ecosystem of the infected, Hunters play a crucial role as harassers and flankers. They rarely attack alone; instead, they work in tandem with other Special Infected or the horde to overwhelm Survivors who are distracted by combat or environmental hazards. Their primary goal is to isolate a target, pinning them down so that Common Infected can swarm or other Special Infected can finish the job. Despite their ferocity, they are not invincible; their thin frame makes them vulnerable to sustained gunfire, and they lack the thick armor of larger infected types like Tanks or Juggernauts.
In Their Own Story
The alleyway was quiet, save for the distant moans of the horde shuffling down the main street. Marcus checked his magazine, his breath fogging in the cold air. He thought he had cleared the area until a guttural chirp echoed from the fire escape above. Before he could raise his weapon, a blur of pale skin and tattered clothes dropped from the darkness. The Hunter landed squarely on his shoulders, claws digging into his neck, dragging him backward into the shadows as his scream was cut short by the sudden silence of the street.
Reader's Guide
The Hunter is defined by its ability to sprint across almost any terrain and leap great distances to grapple Survivors. Upon landing, it pins the victim, rendering them unable to move or shoot while the Hunter begins to drain their health rapidly. This mechanic forces the team to prioritize freeing pinned allies immediately, often creating a chaotic situation where other players must defend against incoming Common Infected. Mechanically, Hunters are highly responsive to the AI Director's pacing. They are frequently spawned in pairs or small groups during intense moments to stretch the Survivors' resources thin. Their ability to climb walls and traverse rooftops makes them particularly dangerous in vertical environments like the Savannah or the Parish. Players must constantly check their surroundings, as a Hunter can appear from any direction with little warning. To counter a Hunter, players should utilize wide-spread weapons or melee attacks to stun it before it lands. Once pinned, teammates can shoot the Hunter to kill it quickly, though this leaves them exposed. The sound of a Hunter's distinct chirp is a vital auditory cue; hearing it means immediate danger is approaching from above or behind.
